Now that the weather is getting warmer, more excavation projects are being scheduled. This brings up the subject of excavation safety. Every year, contractors fail to take the required safety precautions to keep workers safe on the job. Excavations can be many sizes, including trenching and mass open cutting. They are dangerous and can cause injuries. Excavation hazards include, cave-ins, falling loads, and nearby structures collapsing into the excavation. It is recommended to use one of the protection systems listed below.
Sloping – Also known as benching, sloping is when the trench wall is cut at an angle that is inclined away from the wall. Before cutting, it is important to know the type of soil you are dealing with since each type has different requirements. For example, sloping should not be done with Type C soil, which is the lease stable and has a low unconfined compressive strength.
Benching – Some consider benching to the same as sloping since the ground is being cut to form a particular shape and/or angle. However, benching is different than sloping in that the “cuts” take the shape of a horizontal step(s). These steps are usually accompanied with vertical or near-vertical surfaces between them.
Shielding – This protection system uses boxes or supports to shield the workers from a soil cave in. They are easy to install with minimum disruption to the ground around the trench. Workers must exit the trench when the shield is installed, moved, removed or loads are being moved within or above the shield.
Shoring – It is a system of supports installed to prevent soil movement. It’s used when sloping is not an option due to the depth of the cut and the location. There are different types of shoring, such as hydraulic, sheet pile and timber.
