The Top 3 Types of Excavation

When people hear the word excavation, they picture a large piece of equipment digging up dirt. Yet, there is more to it. Excavation is a vital part of the construction process. It creates the foundation for a structure, street, or parking lot. Each construction project is unique, so a "one-size-fits-all" excavation service won't get the job done. Thus, it is important to know the types of excavation for a successful project. There are several types of excavation, which fall into two categories: task-based and materials-based. For this blog, we will explore the top three materials-based types of excavation.
1. Topsoil Excavation – Prior to most construction projects, the upper layer of soil is removed. This is referred to as topsoil, which contains organic compounds that promote growth. It is removed to expose what hopefully is good stable soil.
2. Earth Excavation – This is the removal of soil beneath the topsoil and on top of rock. Whether the project is digging a foundation for a new building or digging a trench for installing gas lines, this type of excavation is the most widely used. Earthmoving equipment, such as excavators and bulldozers, are used to excavate deeply as well as to clear an area of land. The removal of soil and rock is often called “common” excavation, which can also include muck, in contracts.
3. Rock Excavation – When it comes to removing rock beneath soil, using earthmoving equipment won’t cut it. From stratified layers to large boulders, pneumatic hammers, blasting, and drilling are used to break up the rock into manageable pieces to be hauled and/or incorporated into an embankment or foundation in thin layers. If the rock is rippable, the rock can be removed using attachments to a bulldozer or by a hydraulic excavator. Also, the removal of concrete pavement and retaining walls are not considered rock excavation.
