In the U.S., demolition and wrecking is a $7 billion industry. There was a 6% growth this past year, and there is even more growth expected for next year. Despite the growth and revenue, there are still myths about the industry. Let’s take a look at the top five myths.
1. Demolition is bad for the environment – It is easy to see why this myth was created due to the dust and other debris released during a project. Yet, this myth is not true. Demolition contractors utilize approved processes and/or work with environmental services companies to remove toxins from old buildings.
2. Overloading landfills – With so much debris created from a project, many believe all of it goes to a landfill. With green demolition, there are many materials that are salvaged from a project that do not get dumped in landfills, including copper pipes, doors, windows, bricks, and wood.
3. Demolition means blowing up buildings – Many believe demolition is all about blowing up buildings. There is a lot more to demolition than using explosives. Most demolition projects use heavy equipment (i.e., excavators and cranes) to remove walls, floors, or entire structures.
4. Anyone can demolish a building – Not true. Demolition involves precise planning and the use of equipment. A demolition crew has the experience and skills to demolish a structure safely and efficiently without causing damage to adjacent buildings or overhead power lines.
5. Demolition destroys historic buildings – Demolition contractors often preserve historic buildings through select and/or hand demolition, protecting the entire structure and its historic elements (e.g., corbels).
