With any project, there are things that can pop up that can cause delays and increase budgets. No one wants a project stopped for any reason. It is beneficial to know the “unknowns” demolition (and excavation) contractors come across to be proactive on a project. Below are some of the unknowns that can be found on a site.
1. Live Utilities – As a mandatory regulation, you need to call 811 a few business days before you dig. It’s the national phone number that provides the location of buried utilities on your project site. This valuable resource helps prevent the accidental damage to underground utilities, such as a pipe or cable, due to inaccurate or outdated mapping information. It’s also advised to have a ground penetrating radar survey done as well.
2. Unique Items & Structures – During a demolition or excavation project, contractors can discover unique items to be removed, including cars, antiques, cisterns, and glassware. They can also come across buried structures, such as a hospital. During the excavation of a new Apple store in Spain, contractors found the ruins of a 15th century hospital.
3. Noise & Vibrations – Demolition of a structure produces noise and vibrations that affect those who live or work near the site. Vibrations are of particular concern with companies that use sensitive equipment as they can interfere with the equipment's performance. On our Sacred Heart School demolition project, we set up vibration monitors around the site to capture vibration signals that could cause health and/or equipment issues.
