Something overlooked by most and often created by large snow events is roof damage. Snowstorms can leave large amounts of snow on a roof, and through multiple freezing and thawing cycles these large snow loads can damage a roof as it compresses, becoming heavier and heavier as it melts. If a roof structure isn’t well constructed and sound, this snow load can result in significant damage or roof collapse. This is the circumstance that caused a roof to collapse, which happened recently on a Friday night in one of the local municipalities. Wooden roof trusses broke and the roof of a three story, former manufacturing facility collapsed, significantly damaging sections of the exterior brick walls, threatening a number of homes across the narrow street, power lines, and multiple utilities.
This is where Empire Services (Empire) comes in. We responded immediately, and within two hours of receiving the emergency call, we had mobilized one of our long reach excavators, a personnel lift, and a backhoe to the site first clearing accumulated snow prior to beginning the demolition and stabilization process. Due to the building’s orientation, Empire had to coordinate demolition work with Met-Ed, UGI and other utilities suppliers to disconnect service to sections of the damaged building and the adjacent power lines. Once the utilities were safely deenergized, Empire was able to demolish and take down the section of dangerously compromised and collapsed structure, performing this very delicate operation! Using a spotter in the personnel lift to guide the operator, ensuring we did not inadvertently create a large collapse and further weaken the damaged structure by removing the wrong building members or trying to remove too much material in a single motion. As darkness fell, flood lights were mobilized and positioned in appropriate places providing adequate lighting for the demolition operations.
Crews worked well into the early morning hours stabilizing the collapsed structure. All of this took place after this particular crew had spent considerable amounts of time removing snow locally during this particular Friday and the earlier part of the week. Residents were able to return home shortly after 2 AM and get back to the routine of their daily lives. The section of building which was in danger of imminent collapse was brought down safely and securely because of the extraordinary efforts of our crew and Empire’s willingness to respond when emergency needs arise.
The next morning, Empire met with the Code Enforcement Official responsible for the area, and it was determined that the building could not remain in its current condition, and there was no hope of appropriately rehabilitating the structure. Demolition currently continues to bring this building down to ground level while removing appropriate construction debris. Once completed, the area will become a graded lot until the local municipality determines an end use for the property.
