There are many reasons why a residential structure is demolished. On a recent Empire Services demolition project, a house was demolished for highway improvements. There was a time long ago when houses were purchased by the state only to be torn down so that a new highway could be built on the property. Now that most major highways have been established in Pennsylvania, the focus is directed on improving them. The improvements range from resurfacing to widening roads. This was the case for the house demolition in Breezy Corners.
The demolition signals the start of a PennDOT reconstruction project at the intersection of Routes 73 and 12. To ease traffic congestion, PennDOT’s new road design will widen the intersection to allow for left-hand turning lanes in all four directions. The intersection is notorious for long lines of traffic, a common problem when two-lane roads cannot handle the increased traffic due to new construction (e.g., homes and businesses) in the area. The only solution to avoiding the traffic was to take local roads around it, which would take you further away from the area and longer to get back on your route.
While three corners of the intersection will be improved, the parcel that will remain unchanged is the Redner’s Quick Shoppe on the westbound side of Route 73. Empire Services was contracted by Allan Myers to handle the demolition and clearing of the debris, whereas Allan Myers will handle the civil construction part of the project.
The Empire Services team used an excavator to demolish the structure, starting at the top working down. The demolition debris was collected and loaded into several DVC (another Empire Group affiliate) vehicles and taken to designated disposal facilities. Once the home was down, the cinderblock garage was next. This reconfiguration is one of many taking place this year. We cannot wait to see the new intersection.
