There are many parks in Reading which have been reshaped and transformed, but there is one park that may have the biggest transformation: City Park. This park, formerly called Penn’s Commons, was laid out with the specific purpose of being used for public recreation as early as 1749 by John and Richard Penn. The park has undergone many transformations since the early 1800s. However, the latest transformation holds special meaning since it has been expanded to include a modern playground.
Empire Services was contracted by the City of Reading to install a new section in the northwest corner of the park near 11th and Walnut Streets consisting of an all-inclusive playground and a splash pad.
The project began with various utility upgrades prior to the installation of the new splash pad, which features an 11-foot tall cattail and mushroom spray nozzles along with box turtle and frog fountains. As the utilities were upgraded, the playground area was being paved to certain tolerances to receive the specialized soft surface and new playground equipment. The play areas are designed for children with special needs, which include a quiet grove, an on-grade merry-go-round, language panels, and a music station. The colors were specifically chosen to soothe children with sensory disorders and to keep the equipment cool.
On June 7th, the city held a
ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new playground and splash pad. Mayor Eddie Moran, along with help from some neighborhood children, cut the ribbon and took part in running through the splash pad. While there are some finishing touches to be added, such as fencing and walking trails, kids are already enjoying their new playground and splash pad.
Expanding this green space was a unique project for Empire Services. Not only did it provide a safe and fun playground for the community, but it also provided play activities for children with special needs. At Empire Services, we take pride in our quality workmanship and helping local communities improve their environment. Contact us today to learn more about our excavation services!
